You can have your cake, but…
Ray and I have been searching every nook and cranny of Portland searching out the perfect cake for our wedding. Luckily, finding a wedding cake means tasting a lot of cakes, which is actually quite fun. We wanted a square red velvet cake. Vegan, too. And, that’s where things became difficult. It seems that, if one wants to go vegan, they pretty much need to take what is already out there. That one vegan item on the menu. As one bakery told me (long after saying no to making a red velvet cake), Where else are you going to going to get a vegan wedding cake in Portland?
Luckily, there’s Sweet Life in Eugene. Not only do that have amazing vegan cakes, but they were up for red velvet as well. As a sanity check, I brought my non-vegan grandma and mom along for the tasting. Happy exclaimations of wow, it’s not different and this is soooooo good helped make the choice. Awesome!

Hi Candace
I discovered your blog from your raw food recipe website. I love what you have created so quickly and hope we will be great allies for one anothers sites and lives. I am on the other coast- east end of long island. I am wishing you and Ray (haha almost wrote “raw”) a gorgeous wedding. Wish I were invited and wish you all lived closer!
Thanks for all your wonderful sharing and hope to share lots from our coast with you too.

I came across this posting through google. I am also looking for a vegan wedding cake in Portland and am having a very hard time. Are you going to have sweet life deliver it? I saw they charge $2.00 a mile? Or is there another option that I don’t know about?
Thanks

Hey Lucas: I was lucky enough to have friends driving through Eugene to get to the wedding. They just picked it up for me and brought it to the wedding. I figured out, though, that Sweet Life would have been about the same as some of the Portland shops, even if we did have them deliver (the cost is only one way). Good luck!
By the way, we had Food in Bloom cater our wedding. It was all vegan and absolutely amazing.

Thanks Kandace! What places did you look at in portland? I have only been able to get ahold of Piece of Cake. I have called and e-mailed a couple others and they won’t even respond back to me. Do you have any other suggestions? Also, did you have a layered cake? And how was it having your friend pick it up? Any problems? Everyone is telling me that having a friend bring it to Portland (my original idea) is crazy.
Sorry for the bombardment of questions but I am not having much luck getting a vegan cake at this point.
Thanks

Hi Lucas,
I totally understand - this was a hard search for us, too. And in Portland no less! You might also try the Black Sheep Bakery. We had a tasting there. Also, Joseph’s makes vegan cakes, but won’t make vegan wedding cakes (vegan cakes are much harder to stack). We considered using Joseph’s and have a bunch of cakes instead of one wedding cake.
If you can figure out a way, though, I’d still recommend Sweet Life. Our cake was cited as the best wedding cake people had ever tried and we were the only vegans at the wedding!

Thanks again! A few more questions if you don’t mind: Did your friend pick up and bring the cake just in their car? Was it was already stacked? Was this difficult for them? I have e-mailed Black Sheep and called them and they won’t return my calls or e-mails.

My friend did pick up the cake and bring in their car. She is a whiz with food and catering on her own, though, so I had a good idea that everything would be fine. The cake was in 2 separate boxes and then my friend put it together. I had the bakery imbed the holding posts in the first cake - it sounded easier to put together later. I’ll post a picture as soon as I have one - it was lovely.

Did it get hand prints on it and did you have to re-frost it once you put it together? I would love to see the pictures.
Thanks

Also, I saw there prices online. Did they charge a lot more for vegan?
Thanks for all the help!
