hip

today wound up the linguistics conference. these last few days may have taught me more about the discipline than some entire quarters of study. it was just an incredible whirlwind of information and inspiration. today’s highlight was indeed pennycook’s plenary session on hip hop music worldwide. something about all of those linguists analyzing rap music just made me chuckle inside. he also documented some music out of japan, which made me think about my own brief delving into the music scene there. the talk also reminded me of a dream i had the night before last. i was on stage preparing to play a song that i had written and kathy (of the thermals) was trying to quickly teach me how to play the guitar and, in general, look cool on stage. i kept trying to remember the words to the song and was so excited to get out there and jam. now, i don’t play any instruments and the thought of standing in front of any crowd in any capacity terrifies me. in fact, that dream moment may be the only time in my life that i have not been horrified by the mere thought of a crowd before me. maybe good times are ahead.

    Hey Kandace,

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but it looks like I’ll be going back to work for JTB American Summer Camp this summer after the many times I’ve told myself, “This will be my last time, this will be my last times.” Well, such is life. Can’t always be too sure about where you’re going. I haven’t actually talked to Guy about the details yet, but it looks like I’ll be working as an intern in the office, maybe traveling around to the different camps doing who knows what, hopefully not replacing indisposed American directors. I hope that I won’t find myself too frustrated with how things are run… I’ll do my best to change whatever needs change. I’d appreciate any words of wisdom or suggestions you’d like to give me o’ wise Team 6 AD. I’ll miss not working with you this summer. I have a feeling I won’t be working with a lot of people with your kind of work ethic and philosophy. I hope you’re well.
